Description: While growth in the need for such care is the result of many converging factors, two factors have played a pivotal role. The first concerns a growing population of children with complex continuing care needs. While it is often remarked that demands on the Canadian health care system are increasing because of an aging population, what has been less remarked, and not well documented, is the extent to which the care needs of children and families have also grown. Many children who would have died at birth or during their childhood, now live longer and fuller lives due to advances in medical technology.
